Ok, so the LED lighting doesn’t add speed to the CUK Sentinel, but it does add beauty. A bit of backstory – I am a previous Mac Pro user, so this machine had quite a hill to climb. Wow, am I impressed.

Six months after purchase, the machine works and plays well.

When it comes to power and value, the CUK Sentinel is no small contender. It’s hard to compare hardware, as this is not “apples to apples”, but pound for pound and dollar for dollar if given the chance to get a new Mac Pro or another CUK Sentinel, I’d probably go for the CUK Sentinel, and here’s why – value. To get similar specs from a Mac I’d be looking at an easy $4,000-$5,000. I ordered my machine from CUK via Amazon and it was close to $2300 shipped. Deal!

The unboxing went well. The first thing you’ll notice is that this computer does not have optical drives. Software was included for the computer, but on CD. I laughed. Thumb drives might be the next thing. I later made some.

After unboxing the CUK Sentinel, I hooked it up to the BENQ 35″ curved display and was pleasantly impressed. The Nvidia GPU had no problem at all hitting the 144hz refresh rate supported by the BENQ. This was a solid start. Next, I began the painstaking process of installing apps for work, and of course, for play. I installed the entire Adobe suite including Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Lightroom, Dreamweaver, and Muse. I installed a variety of audio production and mastering tools to include Reaper, Sonar, and Reason. If it was a digital media production tool, I installed it. There is so much more software available for PC.

Of course, I also installed Steam and began downloading some games to benchmark the machine. My first go-to choice for benchmarking was Doom, by Bethesda Software. Anyone familiar with Doom knows that Ultra settings can be a nightmare for many machines. The CUK Sentinel ran Doom at Ultra settings and achieved frame rates of 112-136 frames per second. Mission success. Motion was extremely smooth, even at the BENQ’s default resolution of 2560×1080.

Since then I have added many games to the collection and have always been pleased with the visuals and performance. The GTX 1080 series video cards truly are outstanding. I’ve also rendered video quite often with Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Unfortunately, the card is not natively supported but you can edit the CUDA configuration within your adobe folder to manually add the card. This allows Adobe to work with the 1080 series Pascal GPU. Performance there is good.

Video Editing and Production with Sentinel

I would recommend to anyone hoping to use the CUK Sentinel for video production that an additional 500gb – 1TB SSD scratch drive is added. The boot SSD is too small and the 4TB hybrid drive is too slow. Rendering still works fine, but, is slowed if you use the HDD as your primary scratch drive like I did. Secondard SSD drive options are now available if ordering from the CUK website.

Corsair SP2500 Reviewed – The Best PC Speakers I’ve Heard in Years

The Corsair SP2500 2.1 sound system is serious gear. Having a good sound system is crucial to gaming, studio work, and getting the best experience from a high end PC setup. Actually, having a decent sound system is just a part of life.

I’ve been an audiophile for as long as I can remember. I’ve had the opportunity to try a number of different computer speaker systems.

When I was ordering an audio system for my new rig, I wanted a good pair of speakers and a decent sounding sub to go with it. After all, I do more than just listen to music or play games with my machine. I often use my desktop to edit video with Premiere, record and edit voiceovers, and master audio so I needed a system that could rock but still reproduce great tonal quality.

I was fortunate to have selected the Corsair SP2500 high power speaker system as a worthy companion for my PC. From the moment the heavy 35 pound box arrived at my door, I have been enjoying these fantastic speakers daily at high volume. PC speakers are generally a dime-a-dozen, so what makes these unique?

Other than the massive subwoofer (YES, that’s a 4th order bandpass!), a lot. For starters, the external control module offers a fantastic LED display and offers numerous presets such as classical, pop, rock, and action gaming.

My favorite preset? The control module offers a “reference” setting that makes these speakers sound just as good, if not better, than some studio monitors twice their size or cost. Plus, the class D amplifier kept within the 4th order bandpass subwoofer enclosure provides plenty of power (232W) for the system. This is a good thing, because the Corsair SP2500 subwoofer is power hungry.

The subwoofer is huge, I mean, stupid huge. You can use it as a foot rest. And is it loud? It will piss off your neighbors, I promise. However, it’s not just loud. The quality of the lows is quite impressive. It almost sounds like it belongs in the trunk of a car and not under a desk. It vibrates a few walls here.

So far, I have nothing but great things to say about the Corsair SP2500 and I’ve owned mine for approximately 6 months. They have been played quite heavy and still showing no signs of distortion or crackling of sound. If something should go wrong, the boards are easily replaced. The Corsair SP2500 has two boards that could go bad, and if they do, there are parts readily available. I believe the price was $50 per board last time I did check.

The Corsair SP2500 comes with a one year manufacturer warranty, but it’s always good to know that they designed the system so that it could be repaired if something were to go wrong with one of the boards. With the power these speakers are capable of delivering, I am sure that’s always a possibility.

The Corsair SP2500 offers fantastic highs, good midrange, and earth crushing lows from a 4th order bandpass. What’s not to love?

HTC Vive User Review

Virtual reality is still very much in its infancy, but if you have the extra bucks, the HTC Vive is going to give you the best experience bar none. Fortunately, I’ve had the privilege to have had my first VR experience in the early 90’s so I have a healthy bar of comparisons. I purchased the Oculus Rift DK1 just as soon as I could and I immediately threw down for the Playstation VR as any fanboy would.

The Oculus and Playstation VR were ok, but I expected more.

Soon, I started reading about the HTC Vive. The more I read, the more I really wanted to own one. When I eventually had the money to spend on a great computer for work, I began looking for a nice machine that could also benchmark well for VR.

I opted to go with a 4.0ghz Intel i7, the Asus GeForce GTX 1080, an ASUS performance motherboard, a fast SSD for the boot drive, 16GB ram, Corsair liquid cooling, and some fun blue neons for good measure.

It’s all stuffed in a black faceless case.

After the VR-ready computer was built, I was ready for Vive.

It took me a few months but eventually I found myself compulsively ordering the Vive after a late night binge session of For Honor.

The shipping was fast and soon I had my Vive.

The unboxing went beautifully. The HTC Vive arrives in extremely nice packaging that matches the great build quality. Within the box was a headset, a link box, two controllers, two IR receivers, and cables – lots and lots of cables. Installation is simple enough as long as you use HDMI (MiniDP is not compatible with all cards yet). MiniDP was incompatible with the GTX 1080.

Since installation, I’ve run into numerous little glitches here and there, but after resolving the issues I finally had a chance to use the unit as intended.

My thoughts? The HTC Vive is one badass $@!$$%.

Because it opens up the opportunity for indie developers to create games and VR experiences, it’s a “virtual crapshoot” when looking for great software. The Vive hardware, however, is rock solid.

The headset fits comfortably on your head and adjusts with velcro. The IPD is very easily set with a small knob on the right side. The face padding feels comfortable and creates a nice seal, blocking out any outside light that could interfere with the VR experience. This was a welcome touch after using the light-filled PlaystationVR.

The two IR receiver units are perhaps one of the most important components and are built very well. They have an extremely sleek, elegant feel. They have moving internal parts so be sure to place them in a secure location. The slight vibration could cause them to vibrate off of a shelf if not placed on a stand.

Additionally, it might take some time to find the right setup and base station placements if you plan on using this in a room with existing furniture. The two base stations need a constant line of sight with one another and you should also avoid placing them where anything can block a view of the floor and play area.

Ideally, you’d want to use three base station units. An extra unit will set you back roughly $150. I’m thinking about getting a third base unit for tracking.

Two work fine if placed properly.

Using three would provide the most optimum (triangular) tracking setup.

The software is relatively easy to install and, if you have the space, room setup is fairly simple. You draw out the space in your room that you want to use for VR and the software will draw these boundaries for you in-game. These “chaperone bounds” can be a lifesaver at times if you have furniture just outside the play zone.

Smashing a 4K smart TV while slaying zombies is very uncool.

The HTC Vive controllers are very nicely done. They fit comfortably in your hand and have a good amount of weight without feeling too bulky.

The controllers fit well in most average hands.

I purchased a neoprene cover for my headset and controllers. It provides added comfort and protection for the controllers and also protects the headset from extra vibrations or scratching. You’ll find that in many games you bring your hands to your head. Many times this causes you to accidentally smack yourself in the head with the controller. You’ll appreciate the added gear protection for $20.

The HTC Vive is generally controlled via SteamVR. SteamVR provides a nice interface for tweaking settings on the headset. By default, the camera will not be turned on. You will need to do this via the settings in SteamVR. Other settings include reprojection, audio device selection, and microphone settings. The Vive comes with a built in microphone, which is useful for online play.

The amount of available software for the HTC Vive is satisfying. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of VR titles available on Steam. They are not all worth purchasing, however. To be honest, out of the 85 total VR titles I have purchased since obtaining the Vive, less than ten are good. This isn’t always the developer’s fault, however. VR is a matter of personal preference.

For example, Valkyrie is a fantastic VR title, but the 360 degree freedom of motion makes me sick. The same goes for Subnautica. Both are gorgeous games I would highly recommend, but only for a person who does not generally get motion sickness with those types of VR experiences.

The HTC Vive makes me feel extremely hopeful about the future of not only virtual reality, but wearable technology as a whole. It is almost frightening how realistic some of the simulations can feel on the HTC Vive, and some of the horror titles are absolutely incredible. I would not recommend it for a casual gamer or a person unfamiliar with troubleshooting issues on a PC, however.

The Vive is a fantastic piece of hardware, but I can not honestly say my experience was trouble free. At times, the Steam updates can cause your Vive to break. Developers are free to use virtually any engine they’d like to produce VR titles (esp. the ultra buggy Unreal Engine). Anyone using an Nvidia card probably has Game-Ready drivers downloading daily. The combination of those things can cause software nightmares, so the Vive is not for people who are not computer savvy.

Also, setting up and getting in the zone for gameplay can take a while, especially if you are setting it up and helping others use it. The Vive is not something you just casually toss on your face and then load up software and go. Usually, you need to adjust the cords (which are ungodly long), clear the floor space, make sure the tracking units are good to go, load a game, then wait forever. The wait times in some of the titles is completely horrendous.

Plenty of patience is also required for this experience.

All in all, I am very satisfied with my HTC Vive, despite the issues described above. I’ve been around since the beginning of VR and have suffered through many attempts at its birth. The HTC Vive offers a level of immersion unlike any others I have tried on the market. The infrared tracking system is fantastic and simply blows away the tracking on both the Oculus and Playstation VR.

The amount of quality software has also improved since I purchased my HTC Vive nearly 60 days ago. This makes me excited to see what the future of VR will bring. I, for one, am quite pleased that whatever the future of VR is, I will be experiencing it on an HTC Vive. If you have a few extra dollars to spend on a VR unit, the HTC Vive is definitely the one I recommend.

Solved: HTC Vive Error Code 400 (GeForce GTX 1080 Compositor)

If you are reading this, you’ve likely come across the dreaded error code 400 on your HTC Vive headset. After going through numerous different error codes I’ve realized two things about error code 400 on the HTC Vive – It’s widespread and it’s a real pain in the ass. After many hours, I’d almost given up but one simple solution seemed to do the trick. By the way, the video card I have in my PC is an Asus GeForce GTX 1080. It looks like the photo pictured below.

Spoiler Alert: To make a long story short, or if you just want to jump to the solution, I was able to solve the problem (and get better performance with my HTC Vive) after I completely disabled and uninstalled ALL of the manufacturer provided software. This includes the GeForce Experience software. I don’t have a real technical answer as to why this worked, but after spending hours with no solution this solution has so far proven to be fantastic.

Note: HTC Vive and GeForce GTX 1080 – Don’t bother with DP or MiniDP. It is not compatible yet.

As a side note, I originally arrived at error code 400 after “solving” error code 208 with my particular video card. If you are planning or hoping to use a displayport cable with your HTC Vive / GTX 1080 combo it will likely not work. As of this time, a DP to MiniDP connection is not compatible with the HTC Vive and 1000 series Geforce GTX cards. Save yourself some time. Don’t bother.

HTC Vive Error Code 400: What worked for my GTX 1080

I tried everything. I visited numerous forums recommending uninstalling SteamVR, uninstalling the USB drivers, reinstalling all VIVE software, messing with advanced settings in SteamVR, and literally wanted to throw my Vive in the garbage. Up until this point, I got intermittent errors quite frequently.

Major bummer. My HTC Vive was now completely bricked.

As a last ditch effort, I started playing with the advanced video card settings provided by the Nvidia control panel. Nothing there worked either. Then I had a crazy idea – what if I just try to delete all of my video card drivers and software. Windows 10 should have updated drivers, right?

Worst case scenario? I end up reinstalling drivers and software.

To my surprise, after I rebooted my machine all appeared normal. Windows 10 recognized the card and installed drivers. Wonderful. Next, I loaded Steam and crossed my fingers as I opened SteamVR. It worked! Next, I began trying various games and VR titles to see if there was a performance drop. To my surprise, VR performance honestly improved.

Prior to this, I had also been having performance issues with various titles (when my Vive did work). Removing all Nvidia software has seemed to clear up these issues as well. For example, Fast Action Hero was simply unplayable before. It works fine now. In fact, that’s a damn fun game for the price.

Another bonus: The Unreal Engine responds better.

If you are getting error code 400 and nothing else seems to work, and you have an Nvidia card, try to remove the software stack provided by Nvidia and just use the standard Windows 10 drivers. Personally, I never used the Nvidia control panel so I lost nothing and of course, I can find something to replace GeForce Experience.

If this solution worked for you, let me know. Also, if you found a better way to solve this issue or have found working settings that fix error code 400 on the Geforce GTX 1080 permanently that doesn’t involve totally removing all Nvidia software please let me know. Thanks for reading!

Be Godlike – Catch Some of the Top Moments in SMITE for 2016

I installed SMITE this weekend because it looked fun, and holy shit did I get my ass kicked. This reminds me of the moment I decided to try World of Warcraft about two years into development. Armed with my Mr. T grenades, I was ready.

Man, was I wrong. Same situation here.
